Micah's 2 year appointment

Micah did great at his 2 year appointment. He let the doctor do all his stuff and didn't even cry for the shot. He was focused on the sticker that he got to pick out. The doctor said that he looked very good. He weighed in at 33.7 pounds and his height was 35 3/4 inches. The doctor said that he was in the 95% for weight and 85% for height so I should cut out juice and just make sure he is eating healthy without too many additional non nutritious snacks since his weight is higher than his height. It is hard because I don't know where exactly he falls when I only see the doctor one time a year. He didn't sound overly concerned so I will just continue to watch the nutrition and push water more. I feel a little bad since water sounds a little boring. Does anyone know of any good drinks that are almost zero calories but that still have a little flavor to them that are somewhat healthy?

I don't have any right now, so I can't check the calorie content (so this might not even be a good suggestion), but I used to buy Emily the "Roaring Waters" capri-suns. Minute Maid makes them, too--they're flavored water instead of juice. You could also try crystal light, but sometimes those fake sugar additives make me nervous.

I was thinking about crystal light also. I asked Jake what he thought and he suggested watering down the juice he is drinking. Is he drinking things like apple juice? I think it sounds like a pretty good idea to just add more water.

I agree with Jake, you guys hated water when you were young so I just added a little bit of juice just enough to give the water some flavor. I could get you to drink lots of water that way. I'd be more concerned about the inbetween meal snacks.

We definitely do the watered-down juice thing with Emily, too. And after thinking about it, I wonder how concerned you really need to be. I mean, I have no experience, but he doesn't look fat! He's only two.

Thanks for the suggestions. We already water down the juice about half and half but the doctor said he doesn't need it at all. Maybe I will do more of a 1/4 juice and 3/4 water thing.

yeah he doesn't seem overweight to me either... there are a lot of sugary juices out there - do you get the 100% juice stuff? my kids really like v8 fusion (full serving of vegetables and full serving of fruit in every 8 oz serving) - especially the strawberry banana.

i think i need to start watering down our juices a bit more...i could save a ton of cash if the juice lasted twice as long.

i think i'm with your mom on the snacking thing. or wait how much juice does he really drink? is it a constant? maybe limit juice to meals?

and one last thing - he doesn't need juice? that's odd - i never really gave it to them cause i thought they needed it - they just like it! kinda like i like ice cream! too much too often is bad, but a little here and there keeps me happy. :)

Doctors are not always right. He is fine. Just keep doing what you are doing!

Not a diet. He said that as long as Micah was eating healthy he could eat whatever he wanted and seemed fine when I said that Micah ate 3 meals and 3 snacks. I think he just doesn't want Micah to end up more than 10% weight over height and thought an easy thing that Micah doesn't really need is the juice. I bought some strong lemonade today and I am going to use it to do the 1/4 juice thing. I did it today with orange juice as well. I am going to let Micah have the 1/4 juice just if he asks for it. Otherwise it will be water or milk.

I don't think the doctor meant it to be a big issue. Just watch that what Micah is eating is healthy and he should be fine. I was out today at a community center and they had a health group out who had a sign posted with info about sugary drinks. It was kind of scary. I also saw a lot of teens or preteen drinking a LOT of sodas and juices. I think it is good for doctors to keep reminding parents that it is our responsibility to keep our kids healthy and not give them a bunch of stuff with extra wasted calories. Here and there it is fine but just not all of the time.

Okay, that makes more sense. I thought he was talking diet. But I see what you mean about sugary snacks/drinks and wasted calories. And I can see where juice would be an easy cut.

I did the watered juice thing, but Caiden has always preferred water. I never really gave him much juice when he was younger, and I watered it down so much that it probably didn't taste like much.

Good job Micah...what a trooper with the shot. I hate that part, and it's not even me getting it. :p
